The purpose of this strategy is to support and build resilience in our communities, encourage engagement and enable our residents to live safe and healthy lives. We aim to do this by ensuring that individuals have the financial help and skills they need, but also to support them during times of financial difficulties/emergencies. As such this strategy is targeted at Wealden residents, as well as partners.

A consultation on the draft strategy ran between 03 April - 12 May 2023. Feedback was hugely supportive of the cost of living strategy and its aims:

  • There 80 responses to the consultation. 93% were individuals. Female response was 66% with Male response at 25%. Of those who responded, 41% told us they had a disability.
  • 91% of respondents agreed with the reasons why the financial wellbeing of our residents is important to us
  • 91% agreed with the strategies short term vision "In the short-term Wealden's residents are aware of and able to access support during times of financial difficulties/emergencies"
  • 90% agreed with the long term vision too, "In the short-term Wealden's residents are aware of and able to access support during times of financial difficulties/emergencies"
  • In terms of delivering our vision:
    • Partnership Working - working with and supporting other public bodies and local third sector providers - 88% agreed with this
    • Communication/Awareness raising of the services available locally - 92% agreed with this
    • Supporting Residents -firstly, through our own Council services and secondly through funding other support services - 88% agreed

The Cost of Living Strategy 2023 was subsequently taken to the council's Cabinet on 12 July where all the recommendations were approved. Full copies of all the Cabinet papers are available on the right hand side of this page.
