Farningham Road Industrial Estate is located in the south east corner of Crowborough, adjacent to the Railway Station. It is within an industrial estate known as Wealden Business Park, which already comprises 41 industrial/commercial units.

We own a 1.8 acre piece of land within the industrial estate and in September 2022 Cabinet approved the development of this site to deliver employment units in Crowborough to provide for economic development, increase employment and generate a revenue stream for the Council. The plans are also supported by Crowborough Chamber of Commerce.

Around half of the total 1.8 acre site cannot be developed due to protected trees to the north and west of the site (which will not be impacted) and steep banks - but the remainder of the site represents an excellent opportunity to deliver much needed employment land in Crowborough, attract new business to the area and accommodate local growth.

Research tell us there is a need for industrial units in the south east of England and more locally there is a distinct shortage of smaller/starter units in the Crowborough area. Demand is strong for good quality leasehold and freehold industrial space, and there is now a scarcity of such accommodation available on the market.

The project was granted full planning permission at planning committee north on Thurs 1 February 2024. The granted planning permission is for the erection of two commercial buildings, together with associated external works which include parking and landscaping. It adds on to the industrial estate called Wealden Business Park, which already has 41 other industrial units.

It is anticipated that the development of the units could result in the creation of up to 100 jobs with dozens more being employed during the development period.

In summary, the site will support:

  • Nearly 13,000 sq. ft of employment space.
  • Two commercial buildings which contain four units suitable for general industrial, business and storage and distribution uses and can be let as single or multiple units.
  • The units will be in keeping with existing buildings nearby and the wider industrial estate.
  • The new units will be fitted with monopitch roofs and will allow for future occupiers to adapt the units depending on a business’s needs and to create a mezzanine level if required.
  • The development will feature various sustainable elements including Solar Panels, Electric Vehicle charging points and on-site bicycle storage.
  • Skylights are planned on the roof to make the workspaces bright.
  • The units will also be built using materials that will provide high levels of insulation.

Councillor Kelvin Williams lead councillor for public health, wellbeing and asset management, said, “This is a great project which will create some very high-end employment space with quality and sustainability at the very core of its design. It is anticipated that the development could result in the creation of jobs with dozens more being employed during the development period. The development of the units should attract new businesses to the area due to the great network connections with Tunbridge Wells, Kent and London.”
