What is the latest update on the project?

Wealden District Council’s Cabinet has approved the concept design for the proposed medical centre and agreed that the project should progress to the detailed design phase.

Who is responsible for the project?

Wealden District Council is responsible for developing and delivering the building. Decisions relating to healthcare services, staffing, patient care and clinical provision are the responsibility of the GP practices and NHS Sussex.

Why is a new medical centre needed?

Hailsham’s growing and ageing population is increasing demand for GP services. NHS Sussex Integrated Care Board has identified Hailsham as a priority location for new primary care facilities. Existing GP practices are under increasing pressure, and their buildings have limited space to expand, so the proposed centre would increase capacity and provide accessible, modern facilities that meet current and future healthcare needs and NHS standards.

When will a planning application be submitted?

The council is tendering for a contractor to develop the detailed design, known as RIBA Stage 3. This work will include further site investigations and technical design development. Subject to completion of that work, a planning application is expected in summer 2027.

When will the new medical centre be built?

The project is currently progressing through the design and planning stages. Subject to planning approval, funding and procurement processes, further information on construction timescales will be published as the project progresses.

Where will the new medical centre be located?

The proposed medical centre would be located on Reef Way in Hailsham.

Which GP practices will be based at the new medical centre?

The proposed centre would bring Bridgeside Surgery and Vita Healthcare together in one purpose-built facility, increasing primary care capacity for Hailsham and the surrounding areas.

What will happen to existing GP facilities?

Detailed operational arrangements will be developed by the GP practices and NHS Sussex. Further information will be shared as the project progresses.

How large will the new medical centre be?

The concept design is for a three-storey medical centre with 30 consulting rooms. It also includes reception and waiting areas, clinical and office space, meeting rooms and staff facilities.

How will the centre support accessibility?

The proposed design includes accessible public toilets and a larger Changing Places toilet for people who need additional space and equipment. The wider aim is to provide an accessible facility that meets NHS standards.

Will there be parking on site?

Parking and access arrangements will form part of the planning and design process and further information will be published as proposals develop.

Will there be a public consultation?

Opportunities for public engagement and consultation will be provided through the planning process and project development stages where required.
