Why are improvements being considered?
Vicarage Field is an important and well-used part of Hailsham town centre, but some parts of the area now feel dated and would benefit from investment. Current issues identified include ageing building materials, inconsistent paving and street furniture, limited planting and greenery, opportunities to improve accessibility, and views towards important heritage assets being affected by the current layout.
The proposed improvements aim to build on the area's existing strengths, improve the quality and appearance of the public spaces and buildings, and create a more welcoming and enjoyable town centre environment while respecting Hailsham's character and heritage.
What improvements are being proposed?

We would like your feedback on these emerging proposals and whether they will improve the appearance, accessibility and overall experience of Vicarage Field.
Is this trying to change Hailsham or Vicarage Field?
No. This project is not a redevelopment of Vicarage Field and does not seek to fundamentally change the character of Hailsham.
The aim is to build on what already works well by improving the appearance, accessibility and functionality of the area. The proposals focus on enhancing public spaces and improving the existing shopping centre buildings so that Vicarage Field continues to be an attractive, welcoming and vibrant destination for residents, businesses and visitors.
Will local history and heritage be considered?
Yes. Vicarage Field sits within the Hailsham Conservation Area and is close to a number of important heritage assets, including the Hailsham War Memorial, St Mary's Parish Church and several listed buildings along the High Street.
The proposals have been developed to respect and enhance the setting of these heritage assets. Building improvements use materials and features that reflect local character, while proposed public realm improvements aim to strengthen the relationship between Vicarage Field and the historic town centre.
How is this project different from the Hailsham Aspires proposals?
This project is separate from the previous Hailsham Aspires proposals.
Hailsham Aspires explored wider redevelopment opportunities within the town centre. In contrast, the Vicarage Field Improvements project focuses on enhancing the existing public spaces and improving the current shopping centre buildings through repairs, maintenance and environmental improvements.
The project does not involve major redevelopment, new buildings or changes to the overall character of Hailsham.
Will shops and businesses be affected?
The proposals do not include the redevelopment of Vicarage Field or the removal of existing shops and businesses.
The project focuses on improving the public spaces around Vicarage Field and carrying out repairs and upgrades to the existing shopping centre buildings. If the project progresses, the Council and project team will work to minimise disruption during any future construction works.
What are rain gardens?
Rain gardens are shallow landscaped areas planted with vegetation that are designed to collect and manage rainwater from surrounding paved areas.
As well as helping to manage surface water, they can introduce additional planting, colour and biodiversity into public spaces. The proposals include rain gardens to help create a greener, more attractive environment within Vicarage Field.
What happens next?
Once the consultation closes, all feedback will be reviewed and considered as the proposals are refined.
Subject to consultation feedback, further design development and planning approvals, the project is expected to progress through the planning process before moving into detailed design and delivery. Current indicative timescales suggest building improvement works could begin from Winter 2026/27, with public realm improvements potentially starting on site during Spring 2027.
