Help Nature and Wildlife in Wealden
Wealden District Council declared a Biodiversity Emergency in May 2025. This is because wildlife in our district, and across the UK, has declined dramatically in recent decades. In 2023, scientists found that nearly one in six species are at risk of dissappearing in the UK. Some groups are even more at risk,
- Birds: 43%
- Amphibians & reptiles: 31%
- Fungi & lichen: 28%
- Terrestrial mammals: 26%
Iconic species like the turtle dove, hazel dormouse, and European eel now face an uncertain future. But the good news is you can make a difference!
What can you do?
Make Your Garden or Balcony Wildlife-Friendly
Even the smallest outdoor spaces can help wildlife thrive.
Plant pollinator-friendly flowers like lavender and salvias.
Add pots to paved or gravel areas, using perennials or spring bulbs that attract insects. Check the label to see if they are pollinator friendly.
Help hedgehogs move freely by leaving a small gap in your fence for them to move freely between gardens. Check with your neighbours first!
Provide water with a birdbath or shallow container with stones to allow animals to climb out. Even better, create a pond if you can: How to build a pond | The Wildlife Trusts
Avoid pesticides and weedkillers – they harm insects and the animals that eat them. Here is some advice on dealing with unwanted insects and plants without using dangerous chemicals: Chemical-free organic gardening | The Wildlife Trusts
Offer shelter for birds with bird boxes and bushy shrubs.
Create a wildlife-friendly lawn by planting clover or a wildflower patch. How to Plant and Grow a Clover Lawn, Plus Expert Care Tips How to grow a wild patch or mini meadow | The Wildlife Trusts
Make a log pile for insects to live in.

Think About Your Food
Small changes in your shopping can also make a big difference:
- Where you can, buy organic produce to support ecosystems and reduce chemical use. A veg box can be a great way to buy local organic produce which supports wildlife. Local options include:
- If you have space, compost your food waste to create healthy soil that supports plants, insects, and animals. Build your own compost box
Thank you for helping Wealden’s wildlife thrive! Every action, big or small, makes a difference for our environment and our community.
